Polished Pearl started five years ago and the two friends behind it opened a design studio in Ft. Thomas over a year ago. Nicole Robyn got the idea a while back and reached out to her friend Terry Eklund who has a background in fashion design.
"I do the design, pattern making, I have an assistant that helps with the pattern making, we do the prototyping and then once we come up with a product that we--this is what we want to go with, then we send it to India or Moldova for the production," said Eklund.
She helps to train hundreds of women overseas how to sew the intricate designs by hand. The women are paid fair wages to do the work.
"Polished Pearl has really focused on actually going on a higher, more luxury market, so that our women can really feel great about not only the fact that they're free but actually proud of the products that they're making," said Robyn.
The business partnered with others with a similar mission for a line called Free at Last that's carried in Dillard's department stores. People can also find their products online. They're 25 percent off Labor Day weekend. The business partners are trying to move inventory to make room for their new venture. They're rolling out a custom bridal gown line in the spring.
